Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) and Visual Cortex
“The visual cortex is reciprocally connected to the anterior cingulate area, whereas the somatosensory and auditory cortices are connected to the primary and secondary motor cortices.” (Zhang et al., 2016, p. 1733)
“These findings provide an anatomical foundation for understanding the brain mechanisms underlying top-down control of behavior.” (Zhang et al., 2016, p. 1733)
“Both anterograde and retrograde tracing from the sensory areas indicate a clear spatial segregation between the frontal neurons connected to the visual cortex (ACA) and those connected to somatosensory and auditory cortices (MO) (Fig. 2). Anterograde and retrograde tracing from ACA and MO allowed us to delineate separate brain networks associated with different sensory modalities (Figs. 3 and 4).” (Zhang et al., 2016, p. 1740)
“While ACA→VIS neurons make dense reciprocal connections with sensory and association areas, ACA→SC neurons are preferentially connected to PL and ILA (Figs. 5 and 6). These medial prefrontal areas are known to be important for the control of actions” (Zhang et al., 2016, p. 1741)
